Win Antivirus 2006

What is Win Antivirus 2006?

We find that WinAntiVirus 2006 (Unregistered Version) is badware because it makes exaggerated claims of system vulnerability in order to encourage the user to purchase the full version. In essence, WinAntiVirus 2006 (Unregistered Version) belongs to that subset of badware that is often termed "nagware" or "extortionware" -- that is, software that exists solely to encourage users to upgrade to a full version of the product.

What makes Win Antivirus 2006 a badware?

  • • Win AntiVirus 2006 (Unregistered Version) automatically disables Windows Firewall without notifying to the user. This act of disabling Firewall may leave the user's computer more vulnerable to viruses and other badware.
  • • It also fails to disclose to the user that the program will run automatically at start-up.  A process named FWSvc.exe runs continuously in the background of the user's machine, even after the user has exited WinAntiVirus 2006. The software fails to disclose that this process will always be running in the background.  Information available online indicates this to be malware and potentially harmful to the user’s computer.
  • • It continuously runs in the systems tray on startup without the user having any knowledge of this activation or any control over disabling this function.
  • • It automatically downloads "spyware database updates" and "application updates" on the user's computer without the user's knowledge or consent.  There is also no option given to the user to stop these updates from happening.  Further, the user is given no information on what these updates are or what purpose they serve.

How to Remove / Fix the installed WinAntiVirus 2006?

Many badware applications are specifically designed to be extremely difficult to remove. The use of normal removal procedures, such as “Add/Remove Programs,” is often ineffective. Even if you believe that you’ve successfully removed an unwanted software application, there may still be remnants that can continue to wreak havoc on your computer without your knowledge.
In order to effectively remove badware applications, we recommend the use of both anti-virus and anti-spyware applications. Most consumer computer users have some form of anti-virus protection already. Make sure yours is reputable and updated to best defend your machine against the latest threats.
After you install your anti-virus and anti-spyware you will need to run them to scan for badware. Once the tools have completed their scans, follow the recommended instructions, which will usually include selecting malicious files for removal.

Recommendations to users/ customers

We currently recommend that users do not install the version of WinAntiVirus 2006  unless the user is comfortable with the level and nature of the risks mentioned above or until the application is updated and corrected with respect to the characteristics that identify it as badware.
